Telefonplan (HDR)

Telefonplan

At the old Ericsson offices in Stockholm, where the entire area has been named for the presence of the telephone industry.

Photographing at the onset of dusk, I used HDR to get decent exposure and the colorful sky.

Alas, I still couldn't QUITE capture the radiant glow of this cell tower in the morning light. I wish I knew how…

St. Jakob

I'm sorry I spaced and missed two days. Here are the missing photos!

St. Jakob

The church of St. Jakob in central Stockholm, tucked in right behind the opera house, is one of the more charming splashes of colour downtown.

Two interpretations

From the exhibition “White Lies” of painted marble statues.
Two interpretations

The same marble statue was interpreted two different ways, using different analyses and analysis techniques for colour reconstruction and pose interpretation, arrive at different results.

To the left, the statue is interpreted as a temple girl, and painted realistically.

To the right, the statue is interpreted as a goddess, based on the animal motif's detected using UV lights on her clothes.

A Chiaroscuro Christmas

A chiaroscuro christmas

At our fourth christmas celebration of 2010, today the 16th of January 2011, I saw these angels and the gnome sitting on the mantelpiece. The light was just gorgeous, and the scene in the mood I was trying to enter anyway.

I tried to shoot for HDR. But with long exposure, handheld camera and candle-lit motif, it just wasn't happening. Luckily an almost entirely untreated image becomes a dramatic chiaroscuro still life on the theme of christmas, and the winter holidays of light and longing for the end of the hard, cold winter.

[Lazy Week] Ascleipos' sanctuary in Epidavros

Ascleipos temple

This picture will actually get published. A few weeks after our Greece trip, I got an email from a french archaeologist. Turns out he was responsible for the reconstruction of these particular pillars, and liked my photos better than his own, and thus wanted to use them in his paper about the reconstruction work. It'll show up in a peer-reviewed archaeological journal soon.

[Lazy Week] Olympian seed pods

Tree

At Olympia, with the light falling just so, making these seed pods seem translucent in face of the onslaught of the sunlight. A beautiful picture that makes me stop and look everytime I glance past it, or see it appear in my desktop background rotation.

[Lazy Week] Susanne, loosening her hair

Susanne

During our Greece trip this past summer, we took a few modeling/photo sessions. This one is from one we had, with Peloponnesos stretching out in the background, up on a hill, with a monastery right next to us. Once Susanne shook out her hair, the poses got better and the pictures got even more gorgeous. Most beautiful of them all, however, was this shot in the middle of her hair shaking.

[Lazy Week] Tree against the canyon

Tree against the Canyon

This is quite possibly my favourite picture of all times. It's an old, dead tree stump in Grand Canyon, on a plateau down on of the more famous canyon trails.

Traveling intensely — pictures won't be new

In the upcoming week, I shall travel over 16k miles in four days of travel, and participate as the candidate in a full-day campus interview.

I do hope you will not be terribly upset if the pictures featured these all too intense days are not — as originally pledged — pictures I have taken recently, but rather pictures I have taken a while back and am proud of. All of the pictures coming up — tagged with [Lazy Week] — have their rightful places in my desktop background rotation.

Sutro Tower disappearing into the fog

Sutro Tower disappears into the fog

The Sutro Tower, our characteristic three-pronged antenna tower, is one of my absolute favourite architectural features in San Francisco. Seeing the tower rising up (or not, as it were) always puts a smile on my face.

Today was foggy. Looking out across the city, the base is easy to see, but not much more.

As for presentation, the stylistics chosen here were equal parts a really flat and dull foggy light, and that I spent a large part of today looking at the SF MoMA exhibition on Henri Cartier-Bresson. Who did quite a bit of colour photography, but in the end decided that shouldn't count to his œuvre.

Rusting railway

Rusting railway detail

And on that day, all colour drained away from the world. And just as the populace realized that their lives would stay this bleak, this grey, for ever, a single railway spike fought back. Bit by bit, splotch by splotch, it's rusty run-off conquered back the world from the grey into the reds, hoping to be followed by brave greens and blues shortly.

Stanford Lamp Post by night

Stanford lamp post by night

This was a shot with my small Sony point-and-shoot. As such, a non-flash photo after sunset is somewhat outside its competence range. Even so, with some aggressive smoothing in post-processing, the mood I wanted to capture still stands.
